Run on a phone

Open the dot you're building in Dash on a real phone, manage your developer keys and try the release build.

The simulator is quick, but your customers will use a phone, maybe a small Android on a patchy connection in Kenema. Try your dot on one before you publish.

Open your dot in Dash

First, create a developer key, once on each computer you work on:

Terminal
monime dot keys create

Then start the dev server with --device:

Terminal
monime dot dev --device

The terminal shows a QR code. On the phone, open Dash's My Account, go to Preferences > Developer settings and turn on Enable dot debugging. You only do this once. Then choose Live test from the menu on the Dots tab and scan the code.

Your phone and computer need to be on the same network, and the phone must be signed in to Dash with the Monime account your key belongs to. Each time you save, the phone reloads the dot, and anything it logs with console shows up in your terminal.

A live test can reach a server on your computer.

Payments in a live test are real. See Test payments before you try one.

Manage your keys

One key works for every dot you build, in any Space.

Terminal
monime dot keys list
monime dot keys revoke 3f9a1c27b54e0d18

If a laptop goes missing, revoke its key with the ID from list. If list says this computer's key isn't registered, run monime dot keys register.

Preview the release build

To try exactly what you'll publish, run:

Terminal
monime dot preview

It opens in the simulator, not on the phone, and doesn't reload when you save. Run it again after each change.

What to check

  • Every page on a small phone and a big one, with the largest text size, in light and dark mode.
  • A slow or dropped connection. Show progress while you wait, and let people try again.
  • Going back from every page, and leaving Dash halfway through a task.
  • Every permission prompt, including what happens when someone says no. See Permissions.
  • Every way a payment can end: paid, pending, expired, and the person closing the sheet. See How a payment ends.
